Rethinking the interface from scratch

Before redesigning, I studied dozens of real apps to understand what actually works. Then came the hard part — deciding what of all that was Nada Menos.

Nada Menos’s interface had grown one screen at a time, over weeks, and it shows: things that made sense on their own don’t always fit together once you see them side by side. With the app working and the catalog more complete, I finally gave myself the time I’d been putting off: rethinking the whole interface from scratch, instead of continuing to patch screen by screen.

I didn’t start by drawing. I started by carefully studying apps people use every day for similar tasks — building a list, planning the week, comparing — noting what they solved well and what they didn’t, before deciding what of that actually served Nada Menos and what didn’t. Out of that came a long document: a full inventory of every screen, how they relate to each other, and one rule I particularly cared about holding onto — that the web and the app look and feel like the same product, not two products that happen to share a name.

It’s the biggest piece of design work I’ve done on this project, and it still doesn’t show in what’s running in production: what comes next is building it, screen by screen, against that plan.
